Angle Vale Gardens Retirement Estate Completed

In a significant milestone for senior housing in the northern suburbs of Adelaide, the $43 million Angle Vale Gardens Retirement Estate celebrated its completion on Friday 7 March.

Home to 240 residents, the retirement estate features 130 Independent Living Units (ILUs) and 32 Assisted Living Apartments (ALAs) and community facilities.

The newly completed retirement estate was celebrated by local dignitaries including Tony Piccolo, Member of Light (representing Minister for Seniors and Ageing Well, Nat Cook), and Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty.

Angle Vale Gardens’ first resident arrived in 2010.

Designed to cater to the evolving needs of Adelaide’s north, the Angle Vale development was influenced by the South Australian Government’s 30-Year Plan for Greater Adelaide. Gannon Lifestyle Communities CEO Jane Monk said:

“The concept of creating a retirement village in Angle Vale was first considered in 2008,” she said.

“The first homes were completed in 2010, and the final apartment was completed in November last year.

“We’ve built a strong presence in the community, offering retirement villages that prioritise care, compassion, and a sense of belonging.

“Our mission is simple: to build greater communities for older people. At Angle Vale Gardens, we’ve created a space where people can truly thrive, forming deep, lasting friendships within a vibrant, supportive environment.”

Retirement communities such as Angle Vale Gardens play a pivotal role in addressing Australia’s housing crisis. With over 250,000 Australians now benefiting from age-friendly communities, the project stands as a testament to the growing demand for suitable retirement living solutions across the nation.

Positive Health Outcomes in Retirement Communities

The Retirement Living Council’s recent ‘Better Housing for Better Health’ report highlights the positive impact of retirement communities on residents’ health. Key findings include:

  • Residents in retirement communities are 20% less likely to require hospitalisation after just nine months
  • The development of retirement villages can reduce Australia’s housing shortage by 18%, and growing the pipeline could decrease the shortage by 67%
  • Retirement communities contribute to better mental and physical health, with residents being 15% more physically active, 41% happier, and five times more socially active than their counterparts in traditional housing.

The research highlights how retirement communities like Angle Vale Gardens are critical to improving the quality of life for seniors while alleviating pressure on the health and aged care systems.
